Two village boys become stars in international hockey when India registered their Bronze Medal in Men's Hockey in Tokyo Olympics after a gap of 41 years. Before The Tokyo Olympics they played hockey many times and won many prizes for themselves and for India, but the craze of Olympics is different, this is where world sports players meet, challenge each other and the winners are recognized worldwide.
These two Odia boys are none other than our Odisha born Amit Rohidas (28 years old) and Birendra Lakra (31 years old).
One is just 31 years old and another is 28, both play International hockey for India, one of them was the vice captain of India Men’s Hockey in Tokyo Olympics and the other is a defender for the same team.
Amit Rohidas is Odisha’s first non tribal hockey player to play in the Olympics. Born to the economically-challenged scheduled caste family having 5 brothers and sisters, Amit is the youngest son of Gopal and Golapi Rohidas. With the guidance and nurture of Dilip Tirkey, Amit grown into a world class hockey player
On the other hand, Birendra Lakra's whole family has contributed a lot to Indian hockey. Birendra’s elder brother Bimal played for India hockey team and his elder sister Asunta has captained India in Women’s Hockey Team. Now Birendra represented India as Vice Captain in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 to secure a Bronze medal for india.
