Bhog of Lord Ganesha (Boondi Ladoo)

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the important festivals. It is celebrated in India with a lot of passion, energy and dedication. This festival indicates the date Lord Ganesh was born. In other words, this festival is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi. It is the most auspicious day for the Hindu religion and is widely celebrated in all parts of India especially in the state of Maharashtra.


Who is Lord Ganesh?

Lord Ganesh is an elephant-headed Hindu god of prosperity and wisdom. This is why some children in India who celebrate this festival, place their studying books near the Lord in their homes and make sure that their book has been blessed by the God of wisdom.


Bhog (Boondi Ladoo):

Lord Ganesh has a lot of bhogs that are his favourites such as Modak, the most famously made bhog during the festival but another one of his favourite bhog is the Boondi Ladoo.


Recipe of Boondi ladoo (ingredients):

The ingredients of making a delicious Boondi Ladoo are below. You can always change the quantity of the ingredients based on how many you would like to make:

  • 1kg of gram flour
  • 1.5 litre of milk
  • 1kg of ghee (for frying)
  • 1kg of white sugar
  • 4 cups of water
  • 15 drops of food colouring (orange/green/red)
  • 15 soaked saffron flakes
  • 100g of chopped cashew nuts
  • 100g of raisins
  • 20 peeled cardamoms

Recipe of Boondi ladoo (Steps):

Like making any other confectionery treats, there are steps in how to make Boondi Ladoo and here are the steps:


  1. Prepare a thin batter with gram flour and milk while heating ghee in a pan.
  2. Fill the fryer/strainer with the batter up to the half point. 3. Position it over the hot pan of ghee and drain the boondis into the hot ghee by hitting the fryer/strainer on the side of the pan, lifting up and hitting it again. This process should be finished quickly.
  3. Fry the boondis until it turns golden before draining it and removing it. Please remember to use up all the batter.
  4. Prepare a sugar syrup of one and a half thread consistency by boiling sugar and water together.
  5. Add saffron and the chosen food colouring to the syrup. Mix the boondis, syrup, raisins, cashew nuts and the cardamoms.
  6. After about 10 minutes, sprinkle over a little hot water, cover it and keep for about 1 ½ hour.
  7. After the time is up, prepare the round balls of boondis with moist hands.
