Vishnu’s Conch

  • Aryan Satapathy (16 Years)

I would like to express my devotion towards Lord Ganesha, through the help of this essay. The folk tale I will be talking about today will be about Lord Vishnu’s missing conch. Lord Vishnu, had a conch which was extremely dear to him and always carried with him wherever he went. One day, he saw that his conch had gone missing. He instantaneously sent out his forces to search for the missing conch. However much the forces tried to search for the conch, they were unsuccessful. After some time, Lord Vishnu heard the sound of his conch playing. He could not decipher where it was coming from but after a few moments, Lord Vishnu heard the conch being played from Kailash. He embarked on his way to Kailash upon hearing the conch. Upon reaching Kailash, he saw Ganesha playing the conch. Since Lord Vishnu knew that Lord Ganesha will not give up the conch so easily, Lord Vishnu approached Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, being a true devotee, suggested to Lord Vishnu that he should venerate Lord Ganesha and offer Modak (Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet) as the Prasad. Upon completing the veneration, Lord Ganesha gave up the conch and gave the conch to Lord Vishnu. What we can learn from this story is that Lord Ganesha is very mischievous but he will also be pleased if you believe in him and be his devotee. Lord Ganesha is also the first god to be venerated in Indian Mythology as he is known as the one who removes all the obstacles from the future which is why he is also given the name ‘Vignahartha’.
